(1) A stack of books left on the sidewalk with other trash can be a painful sight for
bibliophiles. So it was for a group of garbage collectors in Ankara, Turkey, who began
several years ago to salvage the discarded books they found along their routes. Rather
than dumping them in one of the city's landfills never to be read again, they decided to

(5) give the abandoned books a second life. At first, the garbage collectors kept the books
to read themselves and to lend to family and friends. But soon they hit upon the idea of
establishing a public library with the growing collection of forsaken books at its core.
When local residents heard about these efforts, they stopped leaving their unwanted
books by the curb and began to donate them directly to this new and exciting

(10) community resource.

What began as a modest stack of about 20 books is now over 6,000 titles strong and
still growing. The library boasts a wide range of languages, genres, and subjects, and
attracts readers of all ages. People who live or work in the area drop by to peruse the
titles on the shelves. Students at nearby schools come to flip through comic books, read

(15) works of children's literature assigned by their teachers, or avail themselves of the
expansive science section. Those looking to simply unwind can sit in the library's
lounge, which features board games and offers a calm space to enjoy a book and a cup
of tea.

The well-stocked, nicely decorated library is housed in an abandoned factory. The
(20) bookshelves, much of the furniture, and even the artwork on the walls were rescued

from the garbage, giving added meaning to the expression "One man's trash is another
man's treasure."
