Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each
question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 13-17)
(1) The old saying "Necessity is the mother of invention," was proven by a young
couple living in New Jersey in the 1920s. The accident-prone Josephine Dickson would
regularly burn or cut her fingers while preparing dinner for her husband, Earle.
Unfortunately, she could not manage to bandage her own hands. When Earle came
(5) home from his job at Johnson & Johnson, a company that sold baby powder and sterile
bandages, he would make small dressings for Josephine's wounds out of pieces of tape
and cotton gauze.
Eventually, Earle began preparing ready-made bandages that Josephine could
manage on her own. He placed a length of gauze along the middle of a strip of wide
(10) adhesive tape. On top of that he placed a layer of material so the bandage could be
rolled up and stored without sticking to itself. All Josephine had to do was cut off a
piece, peel away the material, and wrap the bandage around her finger.
Earle described the new invention to his boss, who was unimpressed until he saw
that Earle could apply the bandage to himself, using only one hand. Soon Johnson &
(15) Johnson became the first company to produce and sell adhesive bandages, calling them
Band-Aids. Once the company began making Band-Aids in different sizes, the product
became a huge commercial success and Earle was promoted to vice president of
Johnson & Johnson.
