Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each
question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 13-17)
(1) Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) was one of America's most admired artists.
Though his father founded the well-known jewelry and silver firm Tiffany and Co.,
Tiffany chose to leave the family business and follow his own artistic path. He worked
in almost every artistic and decorative medium: mosaics, lighting, glass, pottery,
(5) metalwork, enamels, jewelry, and interior design. Some of his creations were purely
decorative, but most had a practical use; Tiffany believed that everyday objects could
also be works of art.
It was stained glass that brought Tiffany the greatest recognition. He transformed
this art form, which had remained basically unchanged since medieval times. By
(10) experimenting with new types of glass, he achieved a wider variety of colors. Color, in
his eyes, was the most important element of any work of art. At first, Tiffany produced
stained glass windows for churches and private homes. Eventually, at the suggestion of
Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, he began making stained glass lampshades as
well. The lampshades, with their patterns of flowers, leaves, and fruit, were soon in
(15) high demand at home and abroad. Today, original Tiffany lamps are valuable collector's
items, and Tiffany-style imitations are also popular.
Questions his father's business.
