Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9. Israel launched its first satellite in 1988.

(1) The first Israeli satellite was sent into space in 1988.
(2) Israel finished building its first satellite in 1988.
(3) The first Israeli satellite was designed in 1988.
(4) Israel sold its first satellite in 1988.

10. Apart from the elephant, no land mammal is heavier than the hippopotamus.

(1) The hippopotamus and the elephant are two of the heaviest land mammals.
(2) The elephant is almost as heavy as the hippopotamus.
(3) The elephant is the heaviest land mammal, followed by the hippopotamus.

11. Present-day apprehension about the detrimental effects of texting is reminiscent of early

twentieth-century reservations about the telephone.

(1) People in the early twentieth century had as much difficulty learning to use the
telephone as people today have learning to text.

(2) Today, opinions about texting range from enthusiasm to condemnation, as did
