(1) Not since King Alfred the Great fought off Danish and Norwegian invaders a
thousand years earlier had the English town of Malmesbury seen such excitement.
Reporters arrived from as far away as Japan and two helicopters flew over the town at
all hours, all in the hope of catching a glimpse of a pair of fugitives known as the

(5) Tamworth Two.

In January 1998, as they were being unloaded from a truck outside the local
slaughterhouse, two plucky Tamworth pigs ran for their lives. They swam across the
nearby River Avon, squeezed through a fence, and hid in a garden. The five-month-old
siblings, nicknamed Butch and Sundance after a pair of likeable outlaws in a popular

(10) film, were on the run for over a week, most of which they spent frolicking in a dense
thicket.

The pigs' owner, Arnoldo Dijulio, caused a public outcry when he stated that he still
intended to send the pair to the slaughterhouse should they be captured. Outraged
animal lovers offered Dijulio huge sums of money to buy the pigs' freedom. Eventually,

(15) the Daily Mail newspaper bought the Tamworth Two from Dijulio in return for
exclusive rights to the story. And just in time. Butch was soon caught while foraging in
the thicket and Sundance was flushed out the next day.

Butch and Sundance's new owners sent them to an animal sanctuary to live out the
rest of their lives. In 2003, the BBC network captured their story for posterity in an

(20) hour-long television movie called The Legend of the Tamworth Two.
