Restatements (Questions 9-12)
This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.
9. John Elfreth Watkins, Jr., published a series of predictions for the twentieth century,
many of which transpired.
(1) Many of the events that John Watkins said would occur during the twentieth century
did.
(2) John Watkins witnessed many milestones of the twentieth century.
(3) John Watkins's predictions about the twentieth century were met with skepticism.

throughout the Middle East.
(2) The Fertile Crescent has long been considered the agricultural heart of the Middle
East.
(3) A significant percentage of the food grown in the Middle East comes from the
Fertile Crescent, where the soil is particularly rich.
(4) Most people believe that farming began in the Fertile Crescent, an area that covers a
large portion of the Middle East.
