Text I (Questions 13-17)

(1) In 1872, French author Jules Verne published Around the World in Eighty Days.
The novel is about an Englishman named Phileas Fogg who bets some friends that he
can travel around the world in only eighty days. While today this would not be much of
an accomplishment, to readers in Verne's day it must have seemed an impossible

(5) challenge. Fogg sets out, traveling mostly by steamship and train and, on one leg of the
journey, even by elephant. He has many amusing and hair-raising adventures along the
way, arriving home just in time to win his bet. Readers were fascinated by this
entertaining and thought-provoking tale, and the novel was a huge success.

Some fifteen years later, a bold young newspaper reporter named Nellie Bly
(10) decided to do in real life what Fogg had done in fiction. After studying steamship and

railroad schedules, she concluded that she might even be able to travel around the world
in less than eighty days. Bly approached her bosses at the New York World and talked
them into assigning her the story. A year later, she set sail for London and, from there,
followed a route similar to Fogg's.

(15) Like the fictional Fogg, Bly had many interesting adventures along the way. In
France, she spent a few hours visiting Jules Verne and his wife, and in Singapore, she
bought herself a pet monkey. Every few days, she mailed long, detailed reports about
her exploits to the offices of the New York World. The newspaper's readership soared as
the public eagerly followed her stories. When Bly broke Fogg's "record" – completing
(20) her journey in seventy-two days, six hours, eleven minutes, and fourteen seconds – she
       was greeted by cheering crowds.
