Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each
question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 13-17)
(1) Queen Anne's lace is a wildflower found in many parts of the world. It grows in
fields, empty lots, and by the roadside. It is often called wild carrot because it is related
to the vegetable that we eat. In fact, if you rub and then sniff the plant's leaves, you will
find that they smell like carrots.
(5) Queen Anne's lace has a circle of small, white flowers at the top of its long stem.
Because of the way these tiny, delicate flowers are grouped together, they look like lace.
There is a purple flower at the center of the cluster, making it seem as if a beetle is
sitting there.
No one is sure which Queen Anne the wildflower is named for. According to one
(10) story, it was named after the wife of King James I of England, who was originally from
Denmark. When she came to England to marry the king, Anne saw wild carrot for the
first time. She thought it so pretty that she decided to make lace that looked like the
flower and sew it onto her dresses. Eventually, people began calling the plant by her
name.
