Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9.	 The waters of Tanzania's Lake Natron are red due to a high concentration of

       cyanobacteria.

       (1) Lake Natron is an ideal environment for cyanobacteria, which are red in color.
       (2) The cyanobacteria found in Lake Natron have a bright red color.
       (3) Lake Natron is red because so many cyanobacteria live in the water.
       (4) Cyanobacteria have been introduced into Lake Natron in order to change the red

            color of its water.

10. 	 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote Alice in Wonderland under the pseudonym Lewis

       Carroll.

       (1) Few people know that Alice in Wonderland was written by Charles Lutwidge
            Dodgson, whose pen name was Lewis Carroll.

       (2) Charles Lutwidge Dodgson edited Alice in Wonderland for Lewis Carroll.
       (3) Alice in Wonderland was co-written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and Lewis

            Carroll.
       (4) The real name of Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, was Charles

            Lutwidge Dodgson.	

11.	 Russian oil exports to the U.S. almost doubled between 2004 and 2008.

       (1) In 2008, Russian income from the sale of oil to the U.S. was half what it was in
            2004.

       (2) Between 2004 and 2008, Russia was the second largest supplier of oil to the U.S.
       (3) In 2008, the U.S. purchased nearly twice as much oil from Russia as it did in 2004.

12. 	 The Scottish kilt recalls the garments worn by noblemen in ancient Egypt.
