Restatements (Questions 9-12)
This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.
9. Toynbee, a well-known historian, questioned what would have happened if Alexander
the Great had lived to an old age instead of dying at the age of thirty-three.
(1) Toynbee wondered how history would have developed if, instead of dying young,
Alexander the Great had lived to an old age.
(2) There are different opinions about how old Alexander the Great was when he died,
according to Toynbee.
(3) Had Alexander the Great lived to an old age, instead of dying at the age of thirty-

succeeded until the 1960s.
