Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9. Toynbee, a well-known historian, questioned what would have happened if Alexander

the Great had lived to an old age instead of dying at the age of thirty-three.

(1) Toynbee wondered how history would have developed if, instead of dying young,
Alexander the Great had lived to an old age.

(2) There are different opinions about how old Alexander the Great was when he died,
according to Toynbee.

(3) Had Alexander the Great lived to an old age, instead of dying at the age of thirty-

11. Until the 1960s, France's political structure had altered remarkably little over the

centuries.

(1) Remarkably, it was only in the 1960s that the French government agreed to make
changes in its centuries-old political structure.

(2) Over the centuries, there were attempts to alter France's political structure, but none
succeeded until the 1960s.

(3) For hundreds of years, until the 1960s, surprisingly few changes occurred in the
structure of France's political system.

(4) Until the 1960s, France had enjoyed remarkable political stability over the
centuries.
