Reading Comprehension
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each
question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.
Text I (Questions 13-17)
(1) Carbon, the sixth most common chemical element on earth, is part of all living things.
Combined with other elements, carbon is found in all plants and animals, as well as in
the products that are made from them, including gasoline, food, paper, and cloth.
The two main types of pure carbon, graphite and diamond, are very different from
(5) one another. While the former is a soft substance, the latter is one of the hardest in
existence. This difference is a result of their distinct molecular structures. The carbon
atoms in graphite molecules are arranged in flat sheets, one on top of another. This
makes graphite soft and slippery. In diamond, however, each carbon atom is attached to
four others, making it very hard.
(10) In the 1980s and 1990s, two more kinds of pure carbon were discovered. The
carbon atoms of the first, the nanotube, are arranged in the form of a cylinder. The
second type is made up of a large number of carbon atoms – sometimes even hundreds.
These atoms form a hollow sphere with many five- or six-sided surfaces, shaped very
much like a soccer ball. The scientists who discovered this form of carbon were
(15) reminded of the unusual buildings designed by an architect named R. Buckminster
Fuller. They named the new carbon "fullerene" and nicknamed the molecules
"buckyballs".
