Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9.	 A rainbow comprises a primary and a secondary bow, though the latter is frequently too

       faint to be visible.

       (1) A rainbow consists of two bows but, in many cases, only the primary one is bright
            enough to be seen.

       (2) All rainbows include two bows: the primary one which is formed first, and the
            secondary one which is formed second.

       (3) Though a rainbow's secondary bow is fainter than the primary bow, it often lasts
            longer.

       (4) In most rainbows, the secondary bow is partially hidden by the primary bow.	

10.	 Following the 1848 publication of Orson S. Fowler's book The Octagon House: A

       Home for All, several thousand such houses sprang up in the United States and Canada.

       (1) Orson S. Fowler's The Octagon House: A Home for All, which sold thousands of
            copies in the United States and Canada, led many people to design octagonal houses
            of their own.

       (2) The construction of thousands of octagonal houses in the United States and Canada
            was inspired by Orson S. Fowler's 1848 book The Octagon House: A Home for All.

       (3) The house featured in Orson S. Fowler's The Octagon House: A Home for All has
            been visited by thousands of people from across the United States and Canada.

       (4) In The Octagon House: A Home for All, Orson S. Fowler describes the thousands
            of octagonal houses built in Canada and the United States after 1848.

11.	 The autobiography of Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchú generated

       considerable controversy when its veracity was called into question.

       (1) Menchú's autobiography, which recounted her controversial human rights activities,
            won much acclaim.

       (2) Claims that Menchú's autobiography was not accurate gave rise to widespread
            debate.

       (3) Menchú's provocative autobiography exposed deep divisions within the Guatemalan
            human rights movement.

       (4) Menchú was criticized by the Guatemalan human rights movement when it was
            revealed that her autobiography was authored by someone else.

12.	 "Let them hate, so long as they fear." (Lucius Accius)

       (1) Fear fades away, but hatred endures.
       (2) Without fear there would be no hate.
       (3) Fearful people are less likely to hate others.
       (4) Those who wish to be feared do not object to being hated.
