Restatements (Questions 9-12)

This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the
main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement
which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence.

9. Fungi, unlike plants, lack chlorophyll and therefore cannot manufacture their own food.

(1) Although plants, like fungi, have chlorophyll, they cannot synthesize their own
food.

(2) Fungi cannot generate their own food, as plants do, because they do not contain
chlorophyll.

(3) Without enough chlorophyll, plants and fungi cannot manufacture their own food.
(4) Because they lack chlorophyll, neither plants nor fungi can manufacture food.

10. Alice in Wonderland owes its unique place in English literature to the fact that it is the

work of an inimitable genius.

(1) Alice in Wonderland is indisputably one of the most brilliant works in English
literature.

(2) The unparalleled genius of its author gave Alice in Wonderland its special place in
English literature.

(3) Few writers could have produced a work as ingenious as Alice in Wonderland.

as well as content.

11. The creature with the largest brain in proportion to its size is the ant.

(1) Relative to its size, the ant has the largest brain of any animal.
(2) Like other creatures of its size, the ant has a large brain.
(3) Although the ant is a very small creature, it has a very large brain.
(4) The ant's brain is the largest part of its body.

12. Reconciliations are all too frequently postponed until the passage of time itself becomes

an obstacle.

(1) Often, people delay settling their differences for so long that the delay itself makes
reconciliation harder.

(2) Reconciliations are frequently delayed because people need time to settle their
differences.

(3) If enough time passes, the reasons for a disagreement are often completely
forgotten.

(4) Allowing sufficient time to overcome difficulties is frequently helpful in reaching a
compromise.
